A grafted mix of two persimmon varieties, the Hachiya and the Fuyu, the Chocolate persimmon is much sweeter than either parent. When the inside of the fruit shows brown spotting, it’s not going bad, it’s getting ripe. In fact, the browner and softer it gets the sweeter the taste. The delightful flavor is rich and succulent, somewhat like honey caramel.
Although persimmons are found in some produce sections, Chocolate persimmons are a hard-to-find delicacy. Our Chocolate persimmons are picked to order and arrive ready to enjoy. The ripening process—from lightly speckled flesh to soft and brown throughout—doesn’t mean the fruit is going bad, it’s getting better! They will continue to darken and soften to ultimate sweetness.
Oh my. I never liked persimmons until I tried a ripe Chocolate persimmon.”
Persimmon skins are edible, but some people prefer to simply scoop out the insides. Most Chocolate persimmons are eaten raw, but they can also be made into jam or baked into a tart. Their sweetness pairs well with other fruit, cheese, yogurt and oatmeal.
Chocolate persimmons will keep for up to four weeks in your refrigerator. When they’re soft and dark throughout is when they’re best to eat.
Your order includes twelve Chocolate persimmons individually wrapped in tissue and hand-packed into a beautiful Dragonberry gift box. Orders placed from November 10 through December 9 will be shipped fresh Chocolate persimmons in mid-December as the first fruit in a 3, 6 or 12 month fruit program.
